The process of doing something in order to achieve a purpose and progress to fulfilment.

ACTION

Financial contributions make absolute sense. Money is a valuable tool, but to achieve a greater inner reward. Try to become personally involved - actually do something! Sir Jimmy Saville (Radio and TV personality in the UK) is a £ Millionaire but it still did not stop him working as a volunteer porter in a hospital as he found this more rewarding that just giving cash. (It should be pointed out here that he gave millions of pounds to this hospital and fund raised millions more by being heavily involved).

You will be amazed how good you will feel afterwards. Go on - give it a try!

Family Needs: Are there any members of your (extended) family that need help in some way. Perhaps a little bit of shopping, tidying up or just some company once in a while.

Local Community Work: Volunteers are always needed by hospitals and doctors surgery’s. There are usually many positions for car owners and drivers to take patients who have no transport to and from appointments.

Animal Projects: Local animal rescue centres are always looking for help. This can be dog walking to cleaning kennels. Vets are often looking as well.

Helping Youth:

Not necessarily involving child care, but working with local youth centres  and other projects involving young people. Local councils or citizens advice will be able to help.

Environmental Work: Cleaning or reclaiming old canals, streams and rivers from weeds and rubbish. Help in cleaning litter from the countryside. The work does not have to be physical as help will be needed in the office or shop as well.

Volunteering with Probation: There are many jobs assigned to probation volunteers, from helping teach computer skills, court work, helping monitor drug rehabilitation, form filling (helping those whose literacy may not be good) and much more.

Writing to Prisoners on Death Row:

Human Writes is an organisation that gives you the opportunity to write to prisoners in death row in America. Become a member for a small fee and then start writing. You will also receive a magazine compiled by them with articles and art done entirely by the prisoners. Many are quite thought provoking considering the circumstances.

Helping Homeless Charities: Homelessness isn’t as appealing as some of the other charities, so you will find organisers grateful for any help.

Helping Charities Generally: All charities are always looking for volunteers to help out in a variety of ways. This can be office work, shop work or going out collecting items. Although unpaid, the work can be really rewarding and satisfying.

Once you start looking you will find that the list of things you can do is huge.

All we have done is give a small selection of different ones to give you some idea and feeling for the help that is needed out there.

On our own we have limited power, but when we join with others our power is multiplied many times and we then find we really can make a difference and change some people’s world.

Money is so valuable to project and charities, so it is always good to feel you can help in this way. But when you play an active part in a project or organisation it gives you more fulfilment and it may be the escape from the humdrum or difficult life. You may even make new friends and you will certainly be welcomed by the organisers. As you progress in the organisation, you can also have your say in getting things done. It’s a winning formula for all. Money works, but so does physical effort if you can manage it.
